Impact of Digital Transformation on Learning and Development

  Digital Transformation   August 6, 2019

A connected world has changed every aspect of how we go about our lives.

Monthly data consumption may rise to 9 GB per user in the first half of 2019, a 125% increase over the current usage of 4 GB and it may also touch 11 GB per user per month in the second half

AS PER A RECENT REPORT ON INDIA BY COUNTERPOINT

One of the key areas this data consumption boom has affected is education and learning sector. As much of the learning for the of 80s and 90s generations was through formal education, which was accessible to the privileged few. However, those without formal education were either restricted to learn family businesses or got involved in other blue collared jobs or got absorbed by the agricultural sector.

But today, with the smart phone in hand, things have changed for the Millennials of the country and learning now is not restricted to formal education but has expanded itself in different dimensions of vocational courses.

The surge in video consumption has made learning easy.

About 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute and almost 5 billion videos are watched on YouTube every single day

With access to this global content, not only the city dwellers but also the people from remote parts of the country are honing their talent and are learning from the best. Now even the leading televised talent shows of India are witnessing major participation from Tier 2 cities and beyond, this is a testimony of how internet has penetrated and has provided a level playing field to the millennials across geographies.

The formal education sector has also witnessed a pragmatic shift towards e-learning. With global companies like Udemy.com, Lynda.com, Alison.com to name a few and Indian companies like Byju’s, Intellipaat.com and tutorialpoint.com, there is a whole start-up industry which has mushroomed around this. Byju’s offers online courses on complete curriculums for classes 1 to 12, be it for CBSE board or ICSE. It even has courses for entrance tests like GMAT, NEET, JEE, GRE, etc. Udemy and others on the other hand have a different model, here the tutorial content is user generated but governed by the platform owner which can be accessed and used by the interested candidates. With each course subscription, the instructors get remunerated. One can find courses across categories like Business, IT/Software, Computer Graphic Design, to photography and gardening etc., and the same are available at very affordable price points.

Apart from these there are also start-ups like StrategINK which have come up with bespoke training programs to reskill the IT workforce by creating a physical platform and train them how to sell in the Digital Transformation (Dx) Economy and help them learn, master, apply and demonstrate new behaviors when and where they matter most — in front of the buyer, and provide them with the lift they need to meet their business growth goals.
